Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur is named after a legendary woman scholar Rokeya Shakhwat Hossain who pioneered and promoted female emancipation as well as the advancement of men in the subcontinent. Keeping the vision of Rokeya Shakhwat Hossain in mind and the view to coping up and gaining equality with the advanced world in various fields of higher education, research and study in national and international domain, the Department of Women and Gender Studies was established in 2011 at this university.
Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur is the second university in Bangladesh which is offering Bachelor of Social Sciences degree on a discipline like Women and Gender Studies, under the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University. The Department also offers Master of Social Sciences degree on this particular discipline. The academic program of the department is cautiously designed and developed with a view to ramifying prevailing gender discriminations, and blending of theories with real life situations considering the prospects of employment opportunities in Bangladesh. The discipline imparts both theoretical and empirical knowledge to the students for higher degrees at home and abroad.
