The Department of Statistics started its academic journey in 2009 with four young energetic teachers (Md. Asraful Alam, Nishith Kumar, Md. Shahjaman and Md.Siraj-Ud-Doulah) and is continuing its academic excellency with current five dedicated teachers (Md. Shahjaman, Md.Siraj-Ud-Doulah, Dr. Md. Roshidul Islam, Md. Siddkur Rahman (Rana) and Md. Bipul Hossen ) committed to advancing knowledge and learning through teaching and research in Statistics. The Department of Statistics is one of the pioneer departments of this university foster at specializing and training in statistical methodology in its theoretical, practical/applied, and scientific research aspects of modern age particularly with computer intensiveness in offering Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master’s of Science (M.Sc.) degrees, Masters of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctors of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees in Statistics.
The course curriculum is designed to develop a class of analytic and inferential aptitude among the students through rigorous practical and lab assignments along with exposure to apply statistics in many fields including sciences, social sciences, medicine, engineering, management science, finance, commerce and many more areas. There are flourishing research groups in regression, robust statistics, descriptive statistics, probability, multivariate analysis, econometrics, demography, epidemiology and biostatistics, Bioinformatics, time series analysis, non-parametric analysis, bootstrapping, jackknife, kernel densities etc.The students are trained on various statistical languages and packages like Fortran, C, SPSS, STATA, SAS, MINITAB, R, S-PLUS, MATLAB and MATHEMATICA using well-equipped computer laboratory with nearly 60 computers having state of the art computer facilities. The Department also encourages its students to engage in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, essential for development, nurturing of team spirit and developing organizational skills.
